Newsletter from the Association for Light and Life

Winter 2007

***************************************************************************************

Letter from the Outgoing Presiding Officer

Dear ALL Members,

Transitions, adjustments and decisions are constantly operating in all of our lives. Last summer Gerdean Bowen resigned as the ALL Liaison and Judy Langston resigned as an ALL Councilor. But in the recent election, Judy was nominated and won a new term on the ALL Council, and Gerdean has agreed to carry through with the ALL Newsletter, so it seems nothing of value is ever lost (it just gets recycled!). There is always a slot to be filled for all who are willing to serve.

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to announce that Bob Devine has returned as an ALL Councilor, filling the vacancy left by Judy Langston's resignation. Welcome back, Bob!

Meredith Tenney has submitted Mother Musters the Women, an article loaded with service opportunities and which gives us an update on the Sewing Machine Project in Kenya.

The ALL Light and Life Conference in Santa Barbara last July was a wonderful event. Deborah Goaldman and Donna D'Ingillo did a most impressive job of putting this program together. It was so powerful and so empowering that ALL is discussing using this Light and Life Program as a prototype for other regional meetings around the country next year. It seems, from the experience of that program, that it would work best in small groups of about 30 participants. If you would be interested in having one of these in your area next year, please let us know.

Russ Gustafson is to be congratulated for retaining his seat on the Council in the recent election. I also want to extend congratulations to Judy Langston on her win.

It has been a joy and a privilege for me to serve ALL since its inception and I have every intention of continuing my support of this wonderful Association.

With love and appreciation for all of you,

Allene Vick,

2006 Presiding Officer

Letter from the Incoming Presiding Officer

The Association for Light and Life is now three years into existence. Many things have happened since its inception: the LightLine connection; Common Ground; conferences in Boise, Albuquerque, Santa Barbara, and our upcoming event next June at Unity Village; funding for archiving and the Kenya sewing machine project; Urantia Books to Cuba and South America and direct outreach efforts here in the USA. Continually we see revealed the message underlying the service: personal experience with God and the brother/sisterhood we all share as part of one family.

How can we move this forward? What are the ways in which the Association becomes strengthened by our involvement together? Can we support our individual striving in a collective atmosphere that brings a sense of connection in our service efforts? Can we work together on common goals, yet maintain our individuality? All these are questions to be answered or explored in the year ahead, and we look forward to doing so with you.

Personally, I am glad to be of service in this way once again. Thanks to the Council and Membership for choosing me to return as Presiding Officer. It's truly a challenging atmosphere to try to forge momentum and collectivity out of so many individual desires, but if there is an association we can have together then I would like to strive for it. I hope that others will see the possibilities and choose to come together, while letting go of the things that inhibit us, or keep us from each other.

Along with welcoming our new Officers and Council members, I would like to take a moment to thank Allene Vick for her service to ALL and wish her well in her new service pursuits, both within and outside our association. Also many thanks go to Gerdean Bowen for choosing to take on the role of newsletter editor for ALL. Her service in this way is invaluable in the efforts of networking with one another and keeping tabs on what's happening.

So let's move ahead into this year and see what happens. I look forward to sharing ideas and finding more commonality of purpose with one another.

Sincerely,

Bob Devine

On the Road Again . Dolores Nice

A trip, sponsored by the Urantia Book Fellowship, for the purpose of introducing the Urantia Book in four cities in Ecuador, was recent enjoyed by five USA Urantia Book readers, joined by three readers from Costa Rica, and one each from Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador.

I brought home many great memories from this trip. One of the most important impressions for me was the remarkable way in which we (Buck and Arlene Weimer, Lynn Chapman, Susan Ransbottom and I) worked together with team members from Latin America, especially since most of us had just met for the first time. There was a unity of purpose and dedication to the task of spreading the good news of the Fifth Epochal Revelation.

We traveled by mini-bus to the cities of Quito, Ibarra, Ambato and Quayaquil and gave presentations in hotel conference rooms and community centers. The gatherings averaged 40 to 120 interested persons. We gave away 40 Urantia Books, plus book marks, posters and study aids. We also did a one-hour radio talk show and were interviewed by a local newspaper.

The books were purchased with money donated to the Fellowship's PipeLine of Light project, an important way for us to help to spread the Revelation. Since Urantia Books in many foreign countries cost from $70 to $80, most people, especially if their monthly income is around $600, cannot afford to pay such a high price. Long-time readers downloaded the Papers from the Internet and shared them with members of their study groups.

Many thanks to the members of ALL that contributed to the Pipe Line Project. Since getting back, we have shipped two more cases of books. We had a wonderful response and were thrilled by the very warm and enthusiastic manner in which we were welcomed. It was a joy to meet leaders in each city we visited and it is very exciting to know that the revelation is thriving with many new and young readers.

The Mind of Christ ... Marty Greenhut

The Harp of God is proud to offer its recent publication, a 365-day book of daily meditations, received from Jesus, the Teacher, through ALL member JOYce Mary Brenton.

Although it is intended to be ingested one lesson per day, there are those who read "The Mind of Christ - Yesterday Today and Forever" straight through, for the uplifting, wholesome, and positive effect it brings. This 217-page book, The Mind of Christ, in the style of "God Calling," offers quiet reflection for the faith child in all of us.

Order your $14 copy today from the publisher at HarpofGod.org. Cover art by William Hay, editing and formatting by Gerdean Bowen.

Harp is now preparing "Lessons on Prayer by Teacher Welmek," to be available at the Unity Conference in June.

New Officers & Councilors for ALL

ALL's annual election concluded at the end of November. Over eighty percent of those eligible voted in the election and in a very close race, Russ Gustafson and Judy Langston were each elected to three-year terms on the ALL Council.

Then at the first meeting in January, the Council selected our Canadian friend Kathy George-Moore to be ALL's new Secretary, Rick Giles moves from the Secretary position to be ALL's new Treasurer, and Bob Devine was selected to be the Presiding Officer this year.

A new officer position of Assistant Presiding Officer was created at the January meeting. Rick Voss was selected to fill that position. Please join us in welcoming our friends to these positions. We are assured that ALL will be well served by their efforts.

Welcome to Change . ALL Council

Some changes and decisions were made at a recent Council meeting, that we are passing on to the members for the sake of disclosure and for soliciting involvement by our Association in helping to create future directions and service projects that we will undergo or support.

Voting Revisions

The Council passed a revision to allow Associates of ALL to become enfranchised and vote in the general elections. There are two immediate effects to this change:

First, those who are currently enfranchised by their service or contributions to ALL will have their vote be worth two points in the future, which still gives preference to active involvement and support.

Secondly, we are revising what it means to be an Associate of ALL, so that passivity isn't encouraged. Also, Associates must re-commit each year by sending a notice to us by mail, email, website, etc., that acknowledges their desire to be an Associate of ALL. Obviously a contribution by a current Associate will signify the same.

This is an experiment and may be revisited after a year once we see how the elections process goes, but our desire is to reach out and expand beyond our current conceptions and in doing so, we want to invite participation as best we can without sacrificing those who are at the core of involvement and support.

Unity Village conference slated for June 7-10

Eugenia Bryan, along with support by the team of Judy Langston, Bob Devine, and Dolores Nice, is spearheading conference plans for Unity Village near Kansas City. This is slated to be a cooperative event hosted by members of ALL to incorporate the service efforts of the various groups and to focus on the networking and relationship we have as brothers and sisters, as children of our Spiritual Parents rather than through particular belief systems.

Registration form is included elsewhere in this newsletter.

Changes in Bylaws

Aside from the obvious changes needed to necessitate the above voting revisions, we decided at the Council meeting to strike the stipulation that a nominee can't vote for themselves during an election, from the current Bylaws. People should be able to vote for whom they want to, including themselves, and we feel it is unfair to ask someone to not vote, or vote against themselves.

We have sent out a copy of the Constitution and will be asking ALL members to serve as the critical eye for detail and provide suggestions for changes, revisions, etc., that may need to happen to keep all running smoothly and adapting to the current needs of those in service.

Newsletter:

Gerdean has agreed to take on the position of Editor for the ALL Newsletter once again. You are encouraged to submit articles directly to Gerdean for inclusion in the quarterly newsletter. If any of you would like to work on this Newsletter as a press team for future editions, contact Gerdean or all at onewest.net.

These and other items will be expanded upon in our next Newsletter.

Common Ground . Bob Devine

Common Ground is revved up for 2007, and we want to let you know of a few events scheduled for the group, currently consisting of musicians and poets Mark Austin, Susan Mogilka, Mark Turnbull, Lily Fraser, Cristina Seaborn, Bob Devine, and more.

The group's new CD, "Back to the Garden" which encapsulates music from 2006 events, is being released this week and will be available at the SpiritWorks Store at www.allspiritworks.com. Check this one out, as the mix of rock, folk and blues is perhaps the most inspiring yet.

Common Ground kicked off the new year with concerts on January 5th and 7th in Oklahoma City, at the Red Cup Coffeehouse on Friday and at Unity Center on Sunday, where they had a warm reception, good crowds, and an inspiring time sharing music, poetry, and ideas with people.

The group will be in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 3, for An Evening with Common Ground at the South Valley Unitarian Fellowship at 8:00 p.m. That same weekend, they'll be in Pocatello, Idaho, on Sunday March 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship, followed by a concert, and hope to do a concert at the University on Monday. That Sunday March 4, they're also tentatively scheduled at the Idaho Falls UU Fellowship, at 10:30 am.

Common Ground is tentatively slated to perform at the ALL conference at Unity Village in Kansas City, June 7-10, 2007. Hope to see you there.

Common Ground's website is at www.spiritfest.com.

Mother Musters the Women Meredith Tenney

These are times of trial, but Mother has a plan to bring forth the women to help change the world. She speaks to women of every nation and creed, in many different languages, but the message women are receiving across the planet is remarkably similar. Each of us senses that after generations of patient waiting and serving, now is the time when we are being called forth into roles of leadership. Now is the time when women's voices will be heard. Now is the time when Mother needs us to embody Her love on earth.

This day was foreseen in the words of Julia Ward Howe in the original Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870. Howe had seen the horrors, devastation, and aftermath of the American Civil War, and saw war rise again, this time in Europe with the Franco-Prussian War. These are her words:

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of tears!

Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.

>From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice." Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after their own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of different nationalities, the amicable settlement of inter-national questions, the great and general interests of peace. -- Julia Ward Howe, Boston, 1870

Julia was a woman ahead of her time, but all that she foresaw is coming to pass now. No one has more clearly articulated the message to muster the women that Mother is sending than Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., in her recently published book Urgent Message from Mother Gather the Women, Save the World. Jean writes, "If there is to be peace on earth, it will be because 'Mother' returned home through her daughters."

That message, to gather and prepare to play a critical role in the unfolding divine plan, has been heard by many groups of women. Within the Urantia movement, Women's Corps branches sprang up spontaneously in several diverse locations across North America, including a West Coast Women's Corps, a Salt Lake City Women's Corps, a Rocky Mountain Women's Corps and an East Coast Women's Corps which has since grown into an International Women's Corps. Several of the groups report a vision or a sense of divine guidance as a triggering event that brought their branch of the Corps together.

When members of the East Coast Women's Corps traveled to Africa in 2004 and met with the ladies of Glory Church in Abossi, the Sewing Machine Project was born. Women from all of the Corps worked together to reach out in sisterhood to the women of Kenya. We raised $8,000 - more than the amount requested by the Kenyan women to start up their cottage industry. A Women's Corps Board member returned to Kenya last year with start-up funds. The sewing machines and initial supplies were purchased, and several professional tailors were hired to train the women how to sew. They began a sewing school with a formal training course. The Sewing Machine Project is a small accomplishment that does not impact a great many lives, but it is important as a model of how we in the western world must reach out in partnership to those in the Third World if we are to reflect the will of our Mother and move towards Light and Life.

Several Women's Corps members will return to Kenya this fall, and we look forward to attending the graduation ceremony for the first class of 24 students sitting under an instructor. The literate women will register for a government exam, and the others will take an internal exam and receive a certificate from the Women's Corps. Kimberly King of "Women Without Borders" (See www.women-without-borders.org), will be with us to film the event for a documentary.

The remarkable success of the Sewing Machine Project is the result of the hard work of the Kenyan women who organized and administered the entire project. We western women gained tremendously from the process and our Women's Corps ranks grew dramatically because the project gave purpose and meaning to our organization. Half of the remaining funds will be used to establish a village micro-finance bank allowing the women to borrow funds to help build their individual business enterprises. The other half will be used to help subsidize their attendance at an African Women's Congress in Kisumu, Kenya, December 1-4th.

While attending the Congress in Africa in December, members of the Women's Corps will meet with the Kenyans of Glory Church and represent InnerLife International Inc. in talks about the potential for further projects in partnership with the African people. Both Glory Church and InnerLife have agreed to explore the possibility of creating a transformation center to train spiritual leaders in Kenya and provide opportunities for development, outreach and service to the community.

Donna D'Ingillo of the West Coast Women's Corps and I attended a conference of "Evolutionary Women" (See www.evolutionarywomen.org) in Santa Barbara CA recently, where we were invited to post the specific needs for information and materials for the proposed new projects in Kenya on "Light Pages" (www.lightpages.net). The owner of Light Pages, who has asked to become a member of the Women's Corps, would like this project to be a central feature of her website, linking many diverse spiritual groups together so that they may exchange resources and information.

InnerLife International Inc. is a 501(c)3 which could accept tax deductible contributions from both Canada and the USA and be linked to the Light Pages, and I hope that the money for the new project in Kenya will come from many different groups of believers with InnerLife acting as the channel through which the funds flow. Although it is the Kenyans who will direct and administer this project, this endeavor may provide holders of the FER with a unique opportunity to share their wisdom while planning a center to train spiritual leaders in another area of the globe.

But the Women's Corps is not the only group to hear Mother's call. Outside of the Urantia movement, multiple women's groups have come together, and, as if by divine plan, the work of the Women's Corps seems to be increasingly interwoven with these other, larger, groups. One of the (See http://gatherthewomen.org), is Gather the Women, a global matrix of spirit-led women and women's organizations that share a belief that the time is now to activate the power of women's wisdom on a planetary scale, to have Mother's voice heard, and to model true gender equity. New models of feminine collaboration are being born within Gather the Women (GTW), which has more than 51 partnering organizations including the International Women's Corps. GTW held its first International Congress in San Francisco in 2003 and was joined by such organizations as Millionth Circle, Peace X Peace, Foundation for Conscious Evolution, AYA Partners, Pathways to Peace, Earth Luck International, Spiral Muse, Women of Wisdom, Red Web, and Women Rise for Global Peace.

A second International Congress followed in Dallas in 2004, drawing hundreds of women from many countries around the world. Gather the Women's newest initiative is to launch 6 Congresses on 6 Continents with its matrix of partner organizations. There is a great deal of energy and excitement about this opportunity to expand the collaborative model of the GTW Congress onto each of the major continents, drawing in hundreds of new organizations and reaching thousands of new women with the invitation to step into leadership.

The first of the Continental Congresses was held in North America in Vancouver in June, 2006, which I attended. An African Continental Congress focusing on the needs of grassroots women will follow December 1- 4, 2006, in Kisumu, Kenya. Global Partners for Development, (www.gpfd.org), Women's Perspective, (www.womensperspective.org), and the International Women's Corps, are partnering collaboratively with GTW in that effort, and it is this congress which we hope will be attended by the Kenyan branch of the Women's Corps with financial support from the last of the Sewing Machine Project funds.

The Australian Congress is scheduled in Sydney, July 6-8th 2007, and then an Asian Continental Congress is planned in Goa, India, Sept 23-27th, 2007. Plans for a South American Congress in Brazil are also underway. Representing the International Women's Corps as well as acting as a liaison for GTW, I spoke with Jan Peterson, Chair of the Huairou Commission, (www.huairou.org), formed at the last UN International Conference for Women, about working collaboratively with their network of grassroots women's organizations in our Third World congresses.

A new member of the Women's Corps, Kimberly King (www.women-without-borders.org) of Women Without Borders, has received a large grant to film each of the congresses in a documentary which can help expand the message to many women. I understand her media group has been approached by a rep from a major network who has expressed interest in the women's documentary.

We plan to follow-up the six Continental Congresses with a Women's World Summit in 2008 or later, and I will be traveling, with other members of the Women's Corps and members of the GTW Leadership circle, to Istanbul in mid-September to meet with the World Brotherhood Union (www.dkb-mevlana.org.tr) who has volunteered to host the Summit.

The Women's World Summit will be attended by grassroots representatives from each of the 6 continental congresses as well as other women leaders. The Summit will provide an opportunity for women from around the globe to convene, declare their intentions, and develop a plan of action. I pray that the Summit will be an excellent opportunity for women to speak in Mother's voice, calling for the changes that are necessary on the planet. It will also be an opportunity to call for a 5th UN International Conference for Women, and set the stage for that event in 2012 or later.

A great wave of spirit-led women is arising to change the course of our world, and the Women's Corps seems to be called to a leadership role in that proposition. Not only have we played an integral part in the unfolding women's congresses, but have also been called to a critical role in planning a Women's World Summit, and are involved in creating models for partnership with the Third World.

As we Women's Corps members partner with our sister organizations who have so effectively gathered so many women, we bring a unique understanding of who Mother is, Her place in the Universe, and the unfolding divine plans for the planet. My sisters in these other women's groups are hungry to know more about Mother, and I believe the Women's Corps has been sent to partner with them for a reason.

I believe our Mother yearns to be known by Her children. In the Fourth Epochal Revelation, our beloved Creator Son Michael incarnated on the planet saying "He who has seen me has seen the Father." Although Jesus honored women by recognizing them as authorized teachers of the new gospel of the kingdom, he relied primarily on his 12 male apostles to carry forth his message. However, our Mother will not be coming in an incarnated form to the planet. She relies on Her daughters to make Herself visible, and in the Fifth Epochal Revelation, it is the women who will be given the great opportunity to model the truths of the kingdom of heaven and march in the vanguard towards Light and Life.

Meredith Tenney

Spokesperson
International Women's Corps.

>From the Urantia Papers (Pg. 1114:6 101:8.2):

"Belief is always limiting and binding; faith is expanding and releasing. Belief fixates, faith liberates. But living religious faith is more than the association of noble beliefs; it is more than an exalted system of philosophy; it is a living experience concerned with spiritual meanings, divine ideals, and supreme values; it is God-knowing and man-serving. Beliefs may become group possessions, but faith must be personal. Theologic beliefs can be suggested to a group, but faith can rise up only in the heart of the individual religionist."

Social Architect Damalia (June 6, 1996)

"The radio could be used to much better purpose than it is used, particularly with the talk shows as they are. I have not yet heard a talk show where individuals called up to talk about the Urantia Book, followed by another individual who called to say, "Yes, I read that book; I agree with you," and yet another individual to call to say, "And what about this that it says on such-and-such a page?" and incorporate your belief system into the standard, common routine of talk radio as Christianity as done, as capitalism has done, as atheism has done. Are you afraid of your own work?"

"The Imaginative Adventure"

Let's take a walk together. Now we're not talking about the kind where we analyze the fine points of one another's views for what we find exceedingly different, odd, or discomforting about each other, but the kind where we walk into the room knowing we are all children of a loving, merciful Creator, and the family reunion and celebration is about to begin.

Whether our foundational beliefs stem from the Urantia Book, Teaching Mission, ACIM, Unity, or simply those who recognize the Divine Source of truth, beauty, and goodness as the goal of existence, all are invited to join in this worshipful, service-filled celebration of fellowship and spiritual unity.

Tentative Schedule of Activities

Thursday Afternoon, June 7th:

Registration and getting settled will run throughout the afternoon. Around 4 in the afternoon, we will have a group worshipful meditation, followed by an Urmia style open forum for discussion at the amphitheater. The focus here is on hearing and sharing with one another rather than defending or debating. Dinner will be served around 6 pm.

Thursday evening activities will start around 7:15 pm with welcome, announcements, conference overview & introductions, a short presentation, followed by some music and social time to end the evening. (Side room may be available for impromptu meetings.)

Friday and Saturday, June 8th & 9th:

(NOTE - We will have youth activities if children come. Let us know when registering so we can plan ahead.)

Our two full conference days will be set up as mind, body, spirit oriented so that there can be emphasis on each area of growth each day. Currently, we see mornings to be more worship/spirit oriented, afternoons to be more workshop, discussion - mind oriented, late afternoons to be more fun, relaxation - body oriented, and evenings to be a mixture of worship and celebration.

Early bird morning worship/stillness time will be at 7:30 am, followed by breakfast at 8. Golfers, set your T-times for the 9 hole course early, so you'll be back in time. (Note - Greens fee applies to use of the course.) Then the conference will get underway at 9:00 with morning retreat until 11. This can also be a time for group study, if other options are desired. After a short break, there will be a plenary speaker at 11:15 with breakouts for discussion until lunch at 12:30 pm. Expect representatives from various organizations to speak, including a tentative presentation with Robert Burns, president of the Urantia Fellowship, and others to be announced, as this registration form goes to press.

Then Workshops follow lunch with the first session at 1:30 pm to be conference theme oriented, the second session at 3:15 pm will allow for more diverse offerings with a time for various groups or presenters to have presentations related to their emphasis. Then from 4:45 until dinner, we will have reversion time for people to rest and relax, go for a walk, swim in the pool, have an impromptu meeting, or socialize with friends, and perhaps have some team games, such as volleyball available. Dinner is at 6:00 pm.

The evening will start at 7:30 with a worship celebration incorporating group singing, meditation and inspiring short selections from various conference goers, followed by a quick recap of the day and going into musical entertainment, followed by social and/or dance time if desired. Late meetings can also happen in meeting space, if desired.

Along with regular conference activities, we hope to have one to two service projects during the conference where folks who want to, can join in to carry out some project. Tentatively we are planning an interfaith musical concert for the public and a possible outreach to the homeless or underprivileged in the KC area.

Sunday, June 10th:

Early bird morning worship time will be at 7:30 am, followed by breakfast at 8. The conference will get underway at 9:00, with a short presentation, followed by a recap our conference experiences, some music, and closing remarks, with the conference planned to end between 11-11:30 am. Sack lunches should be available for people who leave early to take with them as they make their way home.
