Welcome to the Fall/Winter issue of the ALL Newsletter from the Association for Light and Life.

It has been a busy year and it seems that each step of service leads to another which leads to another, and so on. So much has happened, and yet there is always more to do. Opportunities abound as friends and associates are manifesting their talents and desire to be of service in various avenues, whether it is in publications, music, web development, conferencing, or other outreach opportunities.

Perhaps it is important to remind ourselves from time to time that we haven't formed the Association for Light and Life so we can call ourselves something and feel important - we are not an organization. Rather, we are an association of people for a common goal - light and life. Although we want to nurture a sense of community, working together and supporting one another, one of our primary ideals is the importance of being characterized more by what we do, than by what we say we are. In that light, these newsletters will hopefully be characterized more by relating our activities and the inspired activities of those in common with us than by promoting the Association itself.

The holiday season is upon us. Let us ponder what is good and right in our lives. Let us acknowledge where we can improve and be thankful for the opportunity. Let us rejoice in the fact of our common spiritual identity in God that makes us all brothers and sisters in one vast cosmic family. Whatever else may be happening in the world of material existence, God has us covered in the spirit. May you be filled with love and joy. Happy Holidays!!!

ALL Election News

Comments by Gerdean Bowen

The first election has been held for the first elective 3-year term positions. We had a good response; all the nominees were well supported by the community. Of the three nominees, Virginia Kelly (who serves as our Treasurer) opted not to run; Manu Puri and LaReen Pierce were in the running and made a good showing; however, the incumbents, Rick Giles, Judy Langston, and Al Wolf were the clear winners. It is a privilege to be part of the process of weaving our combined wisdom into an agency for service. Thank you, LaReen and Manu, for being willing to participate. I urge you to keep the idea of service with ALL alive, for the good news is, there will be an election every year as the Council evolves and proceeds. Congratulations, Rick, Al and Judy. And thank you, one and ALL, from myself and on behalf of fellow Councilors Allene Vick, Eugenia Bryan and Bob Devine.

Celebrating Spiritual Unity

This summer's unity conference in the mountains near Boise, Idaho was memorable in that it brought together believers from several segments of the larger community to enjoy spiritual fellowship and commit to the idea of unity with no one group having precedence over the others. The Association for Light and Life hosted the conference and the attendees were diverse, including members of the Urantia Foundation and IUA, the Fellowship, the Teaching Mission, and friends who were simply spiritually focused, but without any particular affiliation. This was significant in the sense that these people of differing backgrounds displayed no discernable difference on the level of spirit and fellowship. Rather, there was a desire to share, listen, and experience one another that characterized the 115 souls gathered in "unity without uniformity."

After a satisfying and soul-connecting pre-conference retreat with Al Wolf, Dolores Nice, and the exquisite cooking of Judy Langston, the conference opened Thursday afternoon with an Urmian style setting where people spent a couple of hours just sharing from their heart any insights they wanted to offer to the group. It turned into a fascinating dialogue, discussion and sharing period, which we're sure to utilize again in the future. Then Gard Jameson opened Friday morning with a wonderful talk on spiritual unity, followed by several workshops from the likes of Matthew Block, Marvin Gawryn, Gerdean Bowen, Rick Giles, Virginia Kelly, Norman Ingram and many others. Byron Belitsos spoke on the poetics of spiritual living; Saskia Raevouri talked about some of the book projects she's been working with; and Rob Davis's heartfelt sharing on Saturday morning was highlighted by the image of drawing circles to keep people out being counteracted by drawing larger circles to bring people in.

The evenings were set aside for creativity. The songs of Mark Turnbull, Barbara Hester, Mark Austin, Francyl Gawryn, Dan Tyler, Tom Newbill, Peri Best, and others filled the air, along with the poetic musings of Bob Devine, Adele Tyler, Jim Cleveland, Byron Belitsos, David Glass, Bert Cobb, and more. Interspersed at various times throughout the weekend, there were opportunities to experience the efforts at spiritual communication known as the Teaching Mission. And Dolores Nice closed out the weekend with a talk on the importance of building community.

The conference was a grand success. The music and poetry inspired our souls, while speakers and workshops offered time for focus, contemplation and reflection. There was worship; there was praise; and love, service, cooperation, and joy were the prevalent attitudes. We look forward to the next time with anticipation and expectancy.

We received several comments back from attendees and share some of them here:

"I've been to a whole lot of conferences, some religious, some spiritual, and some just business, but it is rare that a conference provides more to the participants than the sum of the presentations, etc. So, thank you for the holistic conference on unity where the total experience was greater than the parts." -- Daniel

"My experience in Idaho, meeting and interacting with you and all fellow believers, was wonderful. I look forward to seeing you all again." -- Julia6

"Thank you for all your work putting it together. It was a wonderful time of reconnecting for me with many old friends, and a lovely time together." -- Francyl

"These newly forming eternal relationships are the foundation of my family life. I come to see you folks and meet you new ones. I have no real "spiritual" goal or intent in mind at these gatherings other than to see you - my brothers and sisters. What a blessing to be among friends in a safe place. Here's to the next time." -- Angus

"In Idaho, we were all the ONE, all the while. And the 200 plus twists and turns up the mountain appeared to lift us all into a new dimension of love and sharing. The air was Light in every way, and the people too. Back to sea/see level, I am now sifting through all the opportunities for service that are unfolding. Are we not blessed?" -- Jim

To all our friends who joined with us in the mountains of Boise, Idaho, please accept our thanks and appreciation for your attendance at the Spiritual Unity Conference. We hope to see you and many others in Santa Barbara, California in the summer of 2006, as well as at the Fellowship's IC05 near Philadelphia.

SpiritWorks Store is Open

One of the purposes of the Association for Light and Life is to support spiritually related creative endeavors in all areas, and one way to do this is to make a place where artists can sell their work inexpensively without the large commissions that places like Amazon, Borders, and other stores take. So we have developed the online SpiritWorks store at www.allspiritworks.com to offer an effective alternative for the sale of spiritual works. We make the sale and transfer payment to the artists, who ship the items. SpiritWorks takes a small percentage from the sale to maintain the store and cover the cost of credit card processing, but since it's a nonprofit store, there is no profit share, and that's a benefit for customers and for artists.

As an example, if you have a book or album to sell or purchase, recognize that Amazon and other services typically charge artists 40 to 50% of the price, which keeps the artist from making a fair profit and the consumer is forced to pay a higher price. And yet the album selling for $16.99 at Amazon, can sell for $10 to $12 at the SpiritWorks store and still give the artist a higher percentage in their own pocket on top of it. The customer wins, the artist wins, and that is the philosophy of building light and life that ALL wants to promote.

Shop the SpiritWorks store today. If you have original books, music, or art that you would like to sell, please contact us at all at onewest.net for details and we would be glad to get your item listed.

Making Beautiful Music Together

(Urantia Musicians CD Project)

For years, people have had the desire to put together an album highlighting the talented musicians in our community, and finally this spring and summer it was accomplished. Several musicians contributed songs to the project, and then Mark Austin and Jim Cleveland spent a couple days at Mark's Celestial Studios putting them together. The result is We Can Be: A Celebration of Spiritual Unity, a wonderful blending of heart and soul that is expressed and harmonized together in truth, beauty and goodness. Artists include: Lily Fraser, Richard Knox, Jim Cooper, Barbara Hester, Bob Catapano, Mark Austin and Band, Francyl Gawryn, Mark Turnbull, Charley Packard, Dan Tyler, Mota-vation, Rick Brunson, Michael Mann, Mark George-Moore & Positive Shift.

The album is at www.allspiritworks.com where you can listen to samples and purchase CD's. You can also send payment of 14.49 per CD, which includes shipping costs, to: ALL CD, 1440 Spaulding Lane, Pocatello, ID 83201.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of this album goes to support nonprofit outreach efforts. Treat yourself today, as well as considering We Can Be as a wonderful holiday gift idea for family and friends.

(Thanks to Mark Greer who initiated the idea, ALL was able to raise funds from community donations to help support the Urantia Youth and Young Adults to make the trek from Chicago to Silver Springs and back this past summer. In doing so, we asked Ashlee Pierce if she could gather perspectives from different attendees at the Chicago Conference and Silver Springs to give feedback to those who supported the endeavor.)

"Thank you and the others who helped make it happen! I think that some of the folks wouldn't have been able to make the trip were it not for it!" - Michael MacIsaac

Urantia Young Adult/Youth Tour
Summer 2004
Ashlee Pierce reporting:

This year marked the fourth young adult tour for people interested in the Urantia Book (even though there have been many gatherings of the younger generations prior to this new tradition). This tour has evolved each year to bring together people from all over the globe with numerous different backgrounds. It has attracted some of the same people year after year and has also welcomed and encouraged new individuals to add to the diversity of people making room for new and more meaningful friendships.

This tour has affected many people's lives for so many different reasons. Each tour is unique and each person is unique and encouraged to be completely who they are. Many people have said that the friendships they have made on tour have been the best friendships they have ever had. When attending an event along the tour or the full length of the tour you have the opportunity to be among your peers, to talk with them about your deepest thoughts and feelings, to observe how many people are doing their best to live the teachings of the Urantia Book. All of this can give a person a wide range of experience to observe something most people don't have in their everyday life.

This year the tour started at the International Urantia Association's conference in Chicago, Illinois. There were on average thirty younger readers out of two hundred and fifty attendees. It was a very diverse event with people from almost every continent. Many younger readers came from far distances by themselves, being fueled purely by their faith and passion for the teachings. The next major event along the tour was the "Uplift the World" retreat at the Silver Springs Retreat Center in Flesherton, Ontario, Canada. This event had a nice array of people from the age of 12 years old to 80 years old. Once again there were people from all over the globe with diverse backgrounds of faith and yet everyone still managed to form strong and meaningful bonds.

Below are excerpts from some who were either on the tour or at the Chicago conference, the first stop along the 2004 tour:

"One thing of major importance to me is connecting with the youth, all of the youth, we are the next generation and I am starting to see how quickly time goes by. Soon we will be the older ones dancing and playing music, having a good time embracing the younger ones. I realize that I need to give more of myself and be more selfless. Giving away all the love I can, knowing that it is reciprocal. Not only giving love to the one I am in love with but also giving all the love I have in all the relationships I have in my life. Share the love!!!. Every time I get home I settle into rest and relaxation, old habits that are comfortable and those habits I created while on tour didn't relate anymore. This time I am going to start fresh. if I can take the regression that I go through after being on such a high from living ideally with great people and use it to pick myself back up and sail forward again. Self-reflection and meditation, I will work towards doing everyday..." -- Noah Wood, Lawrence, Kansas

".To be able to see people from different parts of the world and how they also have the same longing for truth, for the things we all have found in the Urantia Book -- not only that, but also the way that everyone relates to one another -- is very uplifting. because you are never talking superficially like we mostly do in our everyday lives. Most people skim thru life and not really go into depth or into the needs of the persons they are talking with. Here, every conversation is very uplifting because you truly connect with the people and you really have empathy and you can really relate your life with their life. You know that all the teachings and all that the book says really comes alive, you can feel it alive in each person. To not only have it in a text is something very special for me. Each person I met was marvelous and I hope I can meet more." - Santiago, Mexico City

"This being my first conference I didn't know what to expect but it was far better than what I could have ever expected. The workshops were cool. For me just knowing that living beings are out there watching over me gives me a really cool feeling. I loved playing soccer with everyone, it was so much fun!!! I hope to go to many more conferences. I really want to get into the book more -- it is just so overwhelming."--No Name Given

"There really has been warmth of sharing here. Even though there is an essence of the intellectual crystallization, they have definitely been the minority. As individuals we have all grown a lot. It is hard to put into words but it is a tangible feeling." -- Gavin, London

"The most valuable thing for me has been meeting people, new people. Seeing how each person wants to know the concepts of the Urantia Book or wants to know God. I have seen this in every individual. The thing that I really like seeing is how each person has a desire. different, but the important thing is that each person is sincere in his or her desire. I can see the sincerity of each person and their own search for God and how to find God. That is what I really love seeing most of all. Everything in the end is God. You have the whole book but it is just God at the end." - Michelle, Peru

"I connected the idea of sincerity, sincerity, and more sincerity with worship. The next part is decision, decision, and more decisions. They become the result of that love you fill yourself up with. As we fill ourselves up we then can make decisions and direct that love into prayer or actual action. Many people talk about how difficult it is for us to understand how God can descend down to our level and be apart of us. We should take faith in the fact that an actual fragment of God exists in our own intellect. We should understand that we have the ability to contemplate that right now. Just thinking about those things, contemplating the reality of them lifts me into a state of worship." -- Andrew Story, Ohio

"I too had a wonderful experience this year, and want to thank everyone who helped make it so memorable. The bonds formed this year (like many other years) will help us stay close even though the distance is so great. As I looked at all the 'older' people at the conference something dawned on me ... we, the youth, are going to be in each other's lives for a really long time. This fact makes the friendships even more special, and the bonds even stronger. So here's to the many, many, many years to come and the hundreds of experiences we will be going through together." -- Merindi Swadling, Sydney, Australia

"What I found most surprising and wonderful in this my first "Urantia-summer" was the loving feeling that existed among us and how easy it was to get close to other people. I came to the conference totally new to everything and everybody and had been reading the book for little more than half a year. I wouldn't have been surprised if people who already knew each other would prefer to spend their precious time mostly together. Fortunately that wasn't the case and I found myself and others making new friends all the time. I guess it helps that we all have one thing in common and not only being readers of the UB, but the knowledge that we are all brothers and sisters and are probably going to see each other and work together for a loooong time... I also had major spiritual experiences and I'm pretty sure I grew a lot. Among other things I felt that I really had time to make an effort to develop my relationship with God. I LOVE YOU ALL!" -- Anna Mellander, Sweden

"I think that it always goes back to the people. The people!! Fellow readers give me so much hope. I journey through the year attempting to pioneer a fresh existence with truth plowing the way. It is my time in the summer with you all that is the rejuvenation to keep going. In the moments that I am able to share the spiritual goals of other readers I feel like the world is so beautiful and I am not only pioneering but we are all conquering." -- Katie Metsner, Boulder, Colorado

>From ALL: Obviously, due to space requirements, we couldn't include the full extent of the commentary, but we would like to thank all of those who shared and encourage you to keep on sharing. Many thanks go out to all who helped support the tour. May the next, and current generations, be strengthened by this sense of community involvement to expand outward in their lives, sharing the love of God and the importance of community and fellowship with others they chance to meet. It is inspiring to see this growing camaraderie and commitment of our younger generations to spiritual growth. Keep on keeping on.

Project Notes:

Spiritual Unity Outreach

The Spokane/Coeur D'Alene groups of ALL/UB folks have shared their willingness to help host a core group of sincere folks intending to outreach to their communities, and with this potential surfacing, there is discussion beginning about how best to approach the possibilities. Utilizing the idea of musical concerts, workshops and discussions, we may look forward to the potential involvement of various musicians, either collectively or individually to create a music, spirit, or peace festival atmosphere. The hope is to create a community effort of outreach centering around a focus group that represents these different planning potentials. With a strong idea of a program to advertise, we could then invite others to feel free to descend on the area and help in the outreach and advertising in the community on various levels. It can be almost like having a conference, except that we focus on outreach and service to the community, rather than on ourselves and passing time in love for a couple days segregated from the rest of society. Let's bring society into our gatherings to share that sense of love, cooperation and unity. Look for more details in the Winter/Spring issue.

Urantia Books on the way to Peru

To all who supported the efforts to purchase Spanish Urantia Books to send to Peru for the many readers there, thank you. From what we understand, the group in Arequipo has been sharing one book for some time now and the group has grown to about 20 people. Norman Ingram has coordinated with Urantia Foundation and Tom Choquette, who volunteered to take the books down when he goes on vacation to Peru in mid-December. So they should arrive just in time for Christmas! Special thanks go to Norman for his work in making it happen, to Tom for stepping up to the plate, to Patrick McNelly for bringing the issue to our attention, and to all who contributed. Norman shares that there are other readers in third world countries waiting for books, so if you would like to make a contribution you can do so at www.lightandlife.us under the donations link, or you may send a check, made payable to: Association for Light and Life, c/o Book Donations, 1440 Spaulding Lane, Pocatello, ID 83201.

TMArchives Update:

Excerpts from Ron Besser:

"TMArchives Brazil has begun to download the North American site. We anticipate we will have the new Brazil site up by the end of the year, if not before. The North American site is all English except for the approximately 300 translations. TMArchives Brazil will eventually translate the English transcripts to Portuguese and will show menu selections in Portuguese as well. We are presently looking into these additional countries to place TMArchives mirrors: India, New Zealand, and France. The most popular feature on the site is the Glossary of Terms which is followed by the section of transcribed teacher lessons. Traffic volume is remaining consistent. We are averaging between 40 and 50 hits per day with some days going as high as 80 or 100. We also receive in each month people browsing from over 40 different countries. The U.S. leads in usage of the site, followed by Canada, Brazil, Lithuania, and so on. TMarchives currently has 22 links to other sites for various reasons. Recently we added the Jesus Papers audio through the Fellowship site. And thanks to Fred Harris, we are displaying the calendar lessons of Will in PDF format through the links page and in HTML in the transcript section." TMArchives is at www.tmarchives.com.

Urantia Book Basics Completed

The second edition digital download version of Urantia Book Basics by Mary Ebben Livingston is finished and is at www.allspiritworks.com. About the book, Mary writes, "It is my sincere desire that The Urantia Book Basics may serve as an ascending disclosure of the love of our Paradise Parent for all universe children. It is written for our teenagers, young adults, and new readers who need a simple foundation on which to build the higher concepts presented in The Urantia Book. "The Urantia Book Basics" is not meant to take the place of The Urantia Book (since that would be the equivalent of trying to illuminate the sun with a candle). Rather, may it serve as the detonator to one's exploding spirituality and pave the way to the superlative writings of The Fifth Epochal Revelation." Many thanks go to Gerdean Bowen for her help in editing and preparing the book for distribution.

Welmek Transcripts Underway

Gerdean Bowen, in connection with the Harp of God and Marty Greenhut, is beginning to edit and compose the Lessons of Welmek into book format, with the desire that they be the first of many volumes in the Living Waters Library.

"The greatest gift has to do with what you already know: to be of good cheer, to shine a light, to offer an ear, to offer a hand, but most of all to have faith in another's ability to undertake the journey that you already have. For often it is the belief in one's self that is failing in many people, and so to offer your belief in the abilities of others is a wonderful gift. It can make the difference in someone wanting to make that reach." - Teacher Minearsia from the Teaching Mission
