Hi Gerdean,
I had no intention of calling you stupid. As you know when we talked back
when you were first getting online, there's a helluva lot of stuff to learn
about the internet and computers in general. And it takes years to get it
down, only to have it change and have more to learn!
What it looks like happened is this. If you replied to Daniel's message, it
was sent to all three of those addresses. If you replied to ALL, it will
have gone to all three. That's the most usual situation for this. You can
choose to reply to all or just one, depending on your software. Sometimes
you have to set this in preferences, or whatever they are called on PCs.
What I am saying is that IF you select a single address in your address book
to send a message to and it goes to other addresses, one of several things
is wrong. Either you actually replied to a message and accidentally selected
reply to all, or your software is malfunctioning - not entirely likely - or
perhaps when you set up the address in the first place, you included other
addresses in some way. It's not possible to send a post to one list and have
it go to others without SOMEthing having happened. Computers are too literal
for that to happen. We humans, on the other hand, don't even realize what we
have done. The computer says the equivalent of, But you told me to...we say,
no, I didn't. But in the form of our mistake or software mistakes, we did.
If the maillist were the problem, we would probably all have the same
difficulty. We aren't, so it's pretty likely to be coming from your end. But
this doesn't have anything to do with your intelligence, or your ability. It
may have to do with things you don't know yet, but that's nothing to be
ashamed of.
It's not fun to get spun into a position like you got, and I am sorry it
happened. I was trying to help, but sometimes one gets in the middle. Yell
at me all you like. I won't take it on.
The most likely scenario is that you are somehow generating CCs one way or
another. You can test this out. If you send a message to yourself, look and
see if it goes to more than one place. If it doesn't, the problem is likely
either due to replying to ALL to a message that someone else wrote.
Let me know if you keep on having this problem. And I can only say to you
that I wish like crazy that the post of mine back there a ways that ended up
spread around to the wrong lists was more like yours and less what it was. I
don't want to minimize your feelings at all. Just to say, been there, done
that, and it's really not fun!
Having said that, the list IS safe. I want the rest of you to understand
this. When you use your email software, it's always worth taking care that
you know for sure who it's going out to. You can usually check that as you
send it - the information is in the header on most software. I have learned
to check it the hard way, by having excruciatingly personal information go
to the wrong place. It's always worth a reminder, because when I did that, I
was a computer-savvy person who used the net a lot and did computer
consulting for clients for pay. And I still did it!!
Hugs, Gerdean, and I love you.
Thea
